What Is the Alaskan Klee Kai?

The Alaskan Klee Kai (AKK) is a purebred dog breed that is:

> Recognized by the UKC and entering the AKC Miscellaneous Class (June 2025)

> Known for intelligence, loyalty, and their talkative howls

> Comes in three size varieties: toy, miniature, and standard

Note: The AKK is not a pomsky or miniature husky. Those are mixed breeds, not Alaskan Klee Kai.

The AKK has an established history, breed standard, and clubs working hard to preserve it.

The History of the Alaskan Klee Kai

Beginning in the 1970s and after over a decade of selective breeding, the first official Alaskan Klee Kai puppy was sold in 1987 by the breed's developer, Linda Spurlin.  This marked the public debut of the breed. The name “Klee Kai”, meaning “little dog” in an Eskimo dialect, was chosen to reflect its roots and intended size.

*Breed Recognition

1995 – Recognized by the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA)

1997 – Officially recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC)

2020 – Accepted into the AKC Foundation Stock Service (FSS)

2025 – June, Accepted into the AKC Miscellaneous Class

The Alaskan Klee Kai remains a rare, purebred dog maintained through responsible breeding and registry oversight. Although often confused with mixed breeds, it remains grounded in its own standard, history, and structure.
